Training volume is the total amount of lifting work done in a session, a week or a month. Logs count it in one of two ways: tonnage, which is weight × reps summed across every set, or the number of hard sets per muscle group. Five sets of five at 100 kg is 2,500 kg of tonnage and five hard sets. Tracked week to week, volume is the workload dial you turn up slowly and pull back on deload weeks.
Volume is the quantity side of training. Intensity says how heavy, frequency says how often, and volume says how much. Of the three it is the one that drifts without anyone noticing, which is why a log that sums it for you earns its place.
How it's calculated
Two conventions are in use, and they answer slightly different questions.
Tonnage is weight × reps, summed over every set. It is what most apps and spreadsheets mean by "volume", because it is unambiguous and software can add it up from raw sets.
Hard sets counts the number of working sets taken within a few reps of failure, usually per muscle group per week. It is what most research means by volume, because a set of 12 on the leg press and a set of 5 on the squat are comparable as sets in a way they are not as kilograms.
A worked example. A lower-body session:

Two of those sessions in a week is 18,920 kg of tonnage and 22 hard sets for the legs. Notice that the leg press contributes more than half the kilograms from fewer than a third of the sets. That is the reason the two conventions coexist: tonnage flatters machines and high-rep work, set counts flatter nothing, and either one tracked consistently over time tells you whether the workload moved.
Bodyweight movements need a rule of their own. Weight × reps is zero if the log does not know your body weight, so most systems count reps or sets for pull-ups and dips instead. Cardio stays on a separate scale of distance and time.
Why it matters for your log
Volume is the stimulus you can actually control from week to week. Strength on a given day is hostage to sleep and stress; the number of sets you did at a given weight is a decision. Three things follow for a log.
First, it is the earliest warning. Strength plateaus tend to arrive after volume has already slipped for a few weeks, so a weekly volume figure catches the cause before the chart shows the effect.
Second, it makes muscle groups visible. Summed per body part, volume shows the quiet drift that happens in every self-programmed plan: chest and arms climbing, hamstrings and upper back fading. A monthly per-muscle comparison is often the first time a lifter learns they stopped training their back in any real sense.
Third, it is how progressive overload is proven rather than felt. More weight, more reps or more sets all raise tonnage, so a rising volume line is evidence that the plan is doing what it claims.
Common mistakes
- Chasing tonnage with light, long sets. Twenty reps at half weight beats five heavy reps on the kilogram count and loses on almost everything else. Pair volume with an estimated 1RM so quantity and strength are read together.
- Counting warm-ups inconsistently. Include them every week or never; alternating makes the trend meaningless.
- Comparing volume across exercises. 5,000 kg of leg press and 5,000 kg of squat are not the same work. Compare each lift with its own history.
- Reading a single week. One low week is a schedule. Three is a trend.
- Raising it every week forever. Volume that only goes up ends in a missed week. Plan the lighter week before your body plans it for you.

How does volume work for bodyweight exercises and cardio?
Weight × reps breaks down when the weight is your body. The honest approach is to count reps or hard sets for pull-ups, dips and push-ups, and to keep cardio on its own scale of distance and minutes. Mixing a 5 km run into a kilogram total tells you nothing useful about either.
Should volume go up every week?
No. Volume rises in waves: a few weeks of small increases, then a lighter week, then a new block starting a little above the last one. Week-on-week it should be roughly steady or slightly up; a quiet halving without a planned deload is the warning sign worth catching.
